Description
The Howard Johnson chain of restaurants began in 1925 by Howard Deering Johnson and expanded worldwide with the introduction of hotels. At first, the expansion plan fell short because of the stock market crash of 1929 but later in later 1936 began to flourish. The restaurants were separate from the hotel brand beginning in 1986, and in later years receded in locations until eventually disappearing altogether. In 1979, Johnson accepted a takeover bid of more than $630 million from Imperial Group PLC of London, and in 2005 less than 8 were still in operation. The Springfield, Vermont, location and the last New York City restaurant in the chain closed. With an attempt to revive the brand in January 2017 the Lake George property was purchased and ended with the current owner being jailed and finally March 2022 it closed for good and the final establishment to use Howard Johnson's name.
